Where Worlds Split Under the Moonlight
by Kayla Jones
Under the glow of the moon, realities bend, ancient voices whisper, and modern lives crack open at the seams.
In this powerful collection of short stories, Kayla Jones weaves together the mythic and the everyday—where Caribbean folklore, Taíno heritage, spiritual symbolism, and the quiet storms of young adulthood collide.
Girls searching for themselves.
Boys learning the cost of honesty.
Mothers, ancestors, guardians, spirits, and shadows moving through the spaces we pretend not to see.
From emotionally raw confessions to dreamlike encounters, these stories peel back the veil between the worlds we walk in and the ones that shape us. Heartbreaking, humorous, and defiantly human, Where Worlds Split Under the Moonlight explores identity, courage, faith, and the echoes of culture that follow us everywhere.
Whether grounded in reality or slipping into the surreal, each story reminds us:
We all live at the intersection of who we are, who we’ve been, and who we’re becoming.
A resonant, intimate collection for fans of magical realism, contemporary fiction, and voices rooted in the African and Caribbean diasporas.

Of all the short stories in Where Worlds Split Under the Moonlight, the one that stood out to me the most was “Who Else Sees That?”. This story is beautifully written and feels incredibly real from start to finish. The is story captures everyday family moments, like going to basketball camp and running errands, makes the characters feel relatable and genuine. I especially loved how the story slowly shifts from normal, peaceful scenes into something more intense and emotional, showing how life can change in unexpected ways. The writing is very smooth, detailed, and easy to connect with, which kept me engaged the whole time. While every story in this collection is meaningful and well crafted in its own way, “Who Else Sees That?” is my personal favorite because of how realistic and memorable it is. Overall, this book is a great example of strong storytelling and creativity and it’s clear that a lot of passion went into every page. Such an amazing author!
